my, um, humps...

This is freakin' hilarious. Thanks to Kelly for giving me insane levels of appreciation for the dry wit of Alanis Morissette. Click here for the original Black-Eyed Peas video.

sorry

I've been really busy. I go to school, I do community nursing hours, then I go to work, and I do more clinical hours in the hospital (at night, no less). Not that I'm complaining, because this is the beginning of a long-held dream come true for me, but it does explain why I've been neglectful of this blog, I hope.

As promised, here are more pictures from our Colorado trip. You can also see a bunch more on my Flickr page, if you want.

the best birthday present

Taken on my birthday on a mountaintop in Rocky Mountain National Park. Clearly, the glee is spilling out of my pores, I'm so excited. Snow is always a big deal to a Florida girl.

jason is gonna get arrested... for several reasons

Dumb laws in Florida:

Women may be fined for falling asleep under a hair dryer, as can the salon owner.
A special law prohibits unmarried women from parachuting on Sunday or she shall risk arrest, fine, and/or jailing.
If an elephant is left tied to a parking meter, the parking fee has to be paid just as it would for a vehicle.
It is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a swimsuit.
Men may not be seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown.
Having sexual relations with a porcupine is illegal.
It is illegal to skateboard without a license.
When having sex, only the missionary position is legal.
You may not fart in a public place after 6pm.
It is considered an offense to shower naked.
You are not allowed to break more than three dishes per day, or chip the edges of more than four cups and/or saucers.
Oral sex is illegal.
You may not kiss your wife's breasts.
Penalty for horse theft is death by hanging.

okay, here you go

I've got the snucky sniffles. I don't feel very nice. And the 990 photos Jason and I took with our friend Dan's amaze-o camera are still stuck on the camera, because we don't have the cable thingy to download the photos. But, since my page (without any photos) is starting to become only slightly less interesting than, oh, watching paint dry, here you go. I'll provide as many commentaries as I have energy for:

We met at BJ and Cheryl's house for a 20 & 30-somethings get-together for our church. That's Cheryl in the blue shirt. This picture was taken shortly before we all got naked, swilled Cisco, and sacrificed a live chicken.

This is BJ. While seemingly harmless on Sundays, he will unleash his foo on you if you get too close with a camera, like Bruce Lee, Sean Penn, or similar. Maggie is attempting to explain this phenomenon to other victims.

Maggie and I

We took a girls' night out to see Five For Fighting at House of Blues, as well as have a birthday celebration for Maggie and I. Here, she is getting beautiful for John Ondrasik.

Jessica and I at Rainforest Cafe. Jess looks beautiful, as always, but I'm really trying to figure out where I found a vat of Crisco to dip my head in prior to this photo.

Me, Amanda, and possibly one too many margaritas...

leaving my heart in Colorado

We leave for Florida tomorrow. We will leave this wintry wonderland and head back to 90-degree humid heat. I am looking forward to being back in my own bed (where I really do sleep the best) and snuggling with my cat and resuming the healthy lifestyle I'd been doing before I left for vacation.

But I'm really feeling sad about leaving here for so many reasons. Granted, I've been eating some delicious, non-WW-friendly foods, like the fantastic Beau Jo's Pizza and lots of Starbucks Frappuccinos (Java Chip, thank you) and some Fat Tire Beer at the Little Bear Saloon in Evergreen. I've loved every second of it, and if I gain 5 or 10 pounds, it was worth it. Ironically enough, the population here is some of the fittest around: everywhere you look, there's open spaces and trails and hiking places and horse ranches and even just shoveling all this snow that seems to fall so often. I've never seen so many places that offer healthy alternatives on their menus - even Beau Jo's had an entire 2 pages worth of gluten-free offerings.

Anyway, being here has been so relaxing, so freeing, and not just because we're on vacation. I love that life in general here is a little more laid-back. I love how excited Jason gets at the thought of being minutes away from Red Rocks, or all the trout fishing, the mountain homes, all the horses and wildlife, and of course, the snow. He's like a kid in a candy store, and I can't tell you how full that makes my heart feel.

So, yeah, we're not really wanting to go home.

a little bit of grace and maybe some chunk

I'm writing this from my friends' house in Colorado. It's my birthday, and it's snowing outside. We're on the side of a mountain, and it looks like Christmas everywhere. (And if I had had the foresight to bring the cable thingy that lets you upload pictures to your laptop, you might see what I mean.)

So, today, I normally weigh in. I don't think I'm going to weigh in today. And my diet while on vacation has been less than spartan, for sure. I've eaten raisin French toast and French fries and homemade rocky road candy and chicken parmesan and cinnamon rolls and a really delicious open-faced hot roast beef sandwich. Needless to say, these items are not low-cal, low-fat, or low-anything. High-GOOD, really. And if it means I gain five pounds, so be it. Worrying over my weight while I'm on vacation AND it's my birthday... well, WW will say it's possible and doable, but I just don't feel like it. So THERE.

I'm going to play in the snow now.

weigh-in today

Ah, the long-awaited results... I had to miss last week's weigh-in because I had to work:

Down 1.8 pounds, for a total of 33 pounds gone

If I want to reach my new goal - hitting 35 pounds gone by my birthday a week from today - it means I need to drop 2 pounds this week. I've done it before, for sure, but it doesn't seem like something I should count on 100% because I have one very stressful final on Monday (preceded by frenzied studying and likely a lack of exercise on Sunday), a double-birthday celebration and concert Monday night, a long plane ride to Colorado Tuesday morning, and a week's worth of vacation to follow once we're there, likely to include more celebratory dinners and general eating out, since we won't be at home. Does it mean I can't eat healthy? Of course not. But realistically, it's setting myself up for failure if I expect a massive loss during a vacation week, especially when it's a birthday vacation week. So, I may not make it to 35 pounds gone by next Saturday.

But you know, the cool part about it all is that I still weigh less than I've ever weighed before as an adult. As I've mentioned before, the last time I weighed this much, it was only in passing, on my way to higher numbers. For those of you counting, I'm over halfway to my goal: I started out with 60 pounds to lose, and so far, I've lost 33 of those, which means I've only got 27 left to go (good math, Anne!). Along with that, I'm wearing sizes I have only worn in passing... in single digits, no less. I look better than I have in eons. I have color in my cheeks. I can run several miles, several times a week, and not collapse into a heaving gelatin heap on the road. In fact, I love to run. I love exercise in general. My legs have actual muscles in them. The back fat is mostly gone. My face is more defined. My eyes are suddenly bigger with more sparkle. There is curve and form and femininity that looks back at me in the mirror.

Am I eager to get to goal? You bet I am. But I'm enjoying this time, this rediscovery of a girl I never knew.

I love birthdays... specifically, my birthday. I always have. I don't fear getting older, even with this year's birthday putting me into a whole new decade. In fact, each year seems to get better than the last, so I am not looking back. You couldn't pay me enough money to be 21 again! I mean, the energy and stamina was great, but all the years in between then and now have made me the person that I am. And I really like that person. She's kinda cool.

When I was a little girl, I regularly got birthday parties where my friends got to come over and play with me. I distinctly remember my fifth birthday party: going to Chuck E Cheese's and my mom bringing this homemade birthday cake that was "U" shaped, designed to look like a little girl holding out her arms, and in the middle of the "U" were chocolate chip cookies. And all my bestest friends were there, and we got to play all these games. As I got older, the parties tapered off, maybe because I wasn't so big on Chuck E Cheese anymore, or I thought I was too cool for them, or whatever. And then, after a while of no birthday parties, I really started to miss them. So now, as an adult too old to go to Chuck E Cheese without a toddler in tow, I try to make as big a deal as I can out of my birthdays and want to go play games with my bestest friends.

I never really understood why people don't like to have their birthdays celebrated. I think someone told me once that it was because it was a public reminder that they were getting older, and that they didn't want to be reminded themselves. The way I see it, I'm going to get older no matter what, and if I ignore it, I'll still get older. Plus, if you're going to get older - AND YOU WILL - why not tell the world, have everyone shower you with gifts and treat you like a queen, have the excuse to eat as much cake and ice cream as you want, and enjoy it? I'll take the cake, please. (Actually, I've taken too much cake, which is why I started this blog in the first place, right? Hee hee.)

So, World, I'm turning 30 years old in a couple of weeks. Love me. Give me lots of sweet things (or cheesy things, as I love cheese) and gifts wrapped with big bows and treat me like Princess Anne.

To assist with the love, I provide a list of lovely things:

My Amazon.com Wish List

Shameless? Probably. But we all should be. Everyone should have their lives honored and celebrated. I love getting gifts almost as much as I love giving them, and one of the joys of finally earning a decent salary once I graduate is to give my friends the cool kinds of gifts worthy of the friendship they have given me. Because I have some stinkin' AWESOME friends.

Peace out.

are we done yet?

I think I may need to revise my 5 pounds by 5/5 plan. I've found that the higher my stress, the more I want to eat and the less I want to exercise (which, ironically, would reduce my stress). And I am quite stressed. I may just want to maintain.

Have I mentioned how over I am with school? So over it. So tired of stressing out over grades in this ultra-competitive group of students, the post-exam "autopsies" that don't help your grade but raise your anxiety, the constant wondering where your career is going to take you if you don't get the right directed practice placement, BLAH BLAH BLAH. I finished my last day of clinical for this semester, and I'm so exhausted that I think I'm just going to take a nap now. When I step on the plane to take a week off in Denver with Jason, I'll know I can breathe again, if only for a week or so.

Since so many people are asking for a photo, here's one of my clinical group and my awesome clinical instructor today. Bonus points if you can identify anyone else in the photo besides yours truly.
