a night nurse's mostly altruistic prayer before heading off to work

Dear Father,

Let me give my patients the best nursing care possible tonight. Bless my hands and provide healing, comfort, and reassurance through them. Bring peace to each patient, and let them know in their hearts that they are exactly where they are supposed to be, that they are being cared for, that they are safe and have no reason to worry. Make your presence known to them in real and tangible ways, even if they are confused or comatose. Bring peace and comfort to their families, their friends, and let my actions reveal that no matter what, the Great Physician is taking care of them and their loved one.

But Lord, if all else fails, grant me access to enough drugs to let them sleep through the night.

Amen.
